A starting point for the series of works is the pun on "New China", which embraces, on the one hand, the New China in all its exuberant plenty and unsolved contradictions, and, on the other hand, in the "New China" in the sense of "New Porcelain" on the material or pictorial side. Both support the series, the reflection on the state of the Chinese present just like sculptural bringing upto date of one of the oldest forms of Chinese art, But though this "New China" cannot shut itself off from this constantly changing world, it also cannot simply disregard or push aside its past. Even if denied, the proper tradition will be there unknowingly or mottle, submerged, the present. If, then, cracks appear in the façade of society, the suppressed history may break new ground and intensively herald, like the porcelain works of Ma Jun, the clash of cultures.
Ma Jun's re-appropriation luxuriously takes industrial dullness and its merchandise value away from porcelain merchandise, as it cannot be used as a commodity any longer, but at the same moment freeing the porcelain to be the object as such and on its own behalf. By his sculptural handicraft he transforms it into a work of art founded in and out of itself, standing with a full value of its own right in front of your eyes. But he makes use of an intriguing re-evaluation, as he, for his filigree and extremely finely crafted faïences he takes just these obscure objects of desire which stand to be the icons of Western product fetishism, be it the prestigious sports cars, noble perfume bottles and other toiletries like lipsticks, technical achievements like radios and TV-sets or bottles of the epitomical drink of the "Free West": Coca-Cola.
